MTB tubeless wheels: a setup guide

Introduction

Going tubeless removes one specific failure: the pinch flat, where the tube gets crushed between rim and rock. Without a tube there is nothing to pinch, and that single change is what lets you run lower pressures for grip.

Everything else people claim for tubeless follows from that pressure drop rather than from the setup itself, which matters because the trade you are making is a fussier installation and sealant that needs topping up.

What tubeless wheels are

A tubeless wheel carries no inner tube. The tyre bead forms an airtight seal against the rim, and sealant inside the tyre closes the small leaks that remain and the punctures you pick up as you ride.

What you gain

  1. Fewer flats. The sealant closes small punctures while you keep riding, and the pinch flat is gone entirely.
  2. More grip. Lower pressures are usable, which means a larger contact patch and a tyre that conforms to the ground instead of skipping over it.
  3. Slightly less weight. Removing the tube saves more than the tape, valve and sealant add, though the margin is smaller than people assume.

What you give up

  1. A harder install. Seating the bead needs a fast, high volume of air, and the job is messy.
  2. Ongoing maintenance. Sealant dries out and has to be topped up, and the tyre needs checking for slow leaks.
  3. Cost. Tubeless-ready tyres, tape, valves and sealant add up against a rim strip and an inner tube.

How to set up tubeless wheels

  1. Check the components. Rims and tyres both have to be tubeless-ready. You also need tubeless valves and sealant.
  2. Clean the rim and the tyre beads. Any grit left on the bead seat is a leak later.
  3. Tape the rim if it is not already sealed, then fit the valve and tighten it against the rim.
  4. Mount one side of the tyre, pour in the sealant, then fit the second side and work the beads toward the centre channel.
  5. Inflate fast. A high-volume pump or a compressor gets the beads to seat with the characteristic pop.
  6. Shake and spin the wheel to spread the sealant over the whole inside of the tyre.

How much sealant

Manufacturers publish a figure per tyre size and it is worth following rather than guessing: for a 29 inch mountain bike tyre most brands specify somewhere between 60 and 120 ml. Too little and it dries out in weeks and stops sealing; too much is rotating weight that sloshes and never gets used.

Rim tape is the part people skip

Most tubeless failures that look like a bad tyre are actually the tape. It has to be the right width for the rim’s internal measurement, applied to a clean and dry rim bed, under tension, with a generous overlap. A single wrinkle over a spoke hole is a slow leak that no amount of sealant will fix permanently, because the sealant keeps getting pushed into the hole and drying there.

  1. Stan’s NoTubes. The company that took tubeless mainstream on mountain bikes, and still the widest range of kits and sealants.
  2. DT Swiss. Tubeless-ready wheels with the build quality the brand is known for, and good spares availability.
  3. Mavic. The UST (Universal System Tubeless) wheels hold air with less fuss than most, at the cost of a narrower choice of tyres.

Maintenance

  1. Check the sealant. It dries out. Top up on a schedule rather than after a failure.
  2. Inspect the tyre. Cuts and worn sidewalls get worse; a tyre that needed plugging twice is telling you something.
  3. Clean the rim and valve. Dried sealant in the valve stem is the most common cause of a slow leak that appears out of nowhere.

Troubleshooting

The tyre will not seat. Wrap a strap (a ratchet strap or an old toe strap) around the circumference of the tyre to compress it against the rim, then inflate. If that fails, remove the valve core to maximise airflow and thread it back once the bead has popped into place.

Slow leak around the valve. Remove the valve, clean dried sealant out of the rim hole, and make sure the rubber gasket sits flat against the inside of the rim. A drop of soapy water on the valve base shows bubbles where the seal is imperfect.

Sealant will not plug a cut. Cuts longer than 5 or 6mm are beyond what most sealants handle alone. Carry a plug kit, insert one or two plugs from the outside, trim the excess and re-inflate. The sealant then bonds around the plug.

Choosing a sealant. Latex-based sealants (Stan’s, Orange Seal) seal faster but dry out in four to eight weeks. Synthetic sealants (Muc-Off, Finish Line) last three to six months and are slightly slower to close a fresh cut.

Conclusion

Tubeless is worth the effort if you ride terrain where pinch flats happen, which for most mountain bikers means yes. If your riding is smooth and you rarely flat, the setup cost and the sealant maintenance buy you very little.

Carry a spare tube regardless. A sidewall tear that the sealant cannot close ends the ride otherwise, and a tube fitted at the trailside gets you home from anywhere.
