Best 140mm MTB forks: what to buy
Introduction
140mm is the travel figure that stopped being a compromise. It used to sit awkwardly between cross-country and enduro; modern geometry means a 140mm bike now climbs close to a short-travel bike and descends close to a long-travel one, which is why so much of the trail category has settled there.
That makes the fork choice at this travel more consequential than at either extreme, because the frame is no longer doing the work of deciding what the bike is for.
Why 140mm
At 120mm the bike tells you where it wants to go and you ride around its limits. At 170mm you carry weight and a slack front end up every climb to buy descending capability you use for a few minutes a day. 140mm is where a single bike stops being a compromise in both directions: enough support to hold a line through repeated hits, little enough that the climb is not a tax.
The consequence is that the fork now sets the character of the bike. Two 140mm forks with different dampers on the same frame feel like two different bikes.

When 140mm is the wrong answer
Two cases. If your riding is fire roads and rolling singletrack with no sustained descents, a 120mm fork is lighter, cheaper and gives up nothing you were using. And if you ride bike park laps most weekends, 140mm will feel busy and overworked by the third run, which is what the 160mm and 170mm forks exist for.
The other thing worth saying: a 140mm fork on a frame designed around 120mm raises the front end and slackens the head angle beyond what the frame was drawn for. Check the manufacturer’s stated maximum travel before buying up.
Final thoughts
The right fork depends on budget, riding style and terrain more than on which one tests best in isolation. The plush Fox 34 Float Factory, the easy-to-live with RockShox Pike Ultimate and the different DT Swiss F 535 One are all good forks; the difference between them is smaller than the difference between a well-set-up fork and a badly-set-up one.
If the budget is the constraint, the Marzocchi Bomber Z2 with the time spent on setup will beat any of the top three left on their factory settings.
Setting up your fork: sag and pressure
Correct setup determines whether you get what you paid for. Sag, the amount the fork compresses under the rider’s static weight, should sit between 20 and 25 percent of total travel for trail riding, which is 28 to 35mm on a 140mm fork. To measure it, sit on the bike in riding position, compress the fork once to equalise, then measure between the wiper seal and the o-ring on the stanchion.
Air pressure varies by rider weight and preference, but as a starting point: 60 to 65 PSI for a 70 kg rider, adding roughly 5 PSI per 5 kg of additional body weight. From there, adjust rebound so the fork extends quickly enough to track successive bumps without bouncing; the wheel should return to the ground without springing upward. Low-speed compression controls how the fork reacts to body movement and braking forces. Start 3 or 4 clicks from fully open and add more if the fork dives under braking.
Service intervals matter for longevity: a lower leg service (oil change and wiper seal lubrication) every 50 hours of riding, and a full damper service annually or every 200 hours, whichever comes first.
Set the fork up on a trail you know well, where you can feel what a change did. Working out your compression settings halfway down an unfamiliar descent tells you nothing useful.
