Rider in their forties on a mountain bike trail

Mountain biking works well as a sport to take up or return to after 40 for one specific reason: it is low impact on the joints and it scales to whatever fitness you arrive with. You can ride the same trail at a heart rate that leaves you talking or one that does not, and the bike absorbs the load that running puts through your knees.

What changes after 40 is not whether you can do it. It is recovery, crash consequence, and the fact that the general health claims made for cycling are not all true. This covers all three.

The claim that is wrong: bone density

Cycling is repeatedly listed among activities that improve bone density. It does not, and riders over 40 should know that before they rely on it.

Bone responds to weight-bearing impact loading. Cycling is specifically not weight-bearing; the saddle and pedals carry you. Endurance cyclists are frequently found to have lower bone mineral density than sedentary controls of the same age, which is the opposite of the effect people assume they are getting. Mountain biking involves more vibration and more impact than road riding, so it is better than road cycling on this measure, but that is a low bar rather than a recommendation.

The practical consequence: if bone health is one of your reasons for riding, add resistance training or something with impact. Two strength sessions a week does more for bone than any amount of riding, and it also does more for the crash you will eventually have. Recovery is the real constraint

The limiting factor after 40 is not how hard you can ride. It is how often.

Connective tissue adapts more slowly than muscle, and it adapts more slowly at 50 than at 25. Spacing hard rides 48 to 72 hours apart rather than riding back to back is the single change that keeps people riding rather than cycling through six-week injury layoffs. Easy rides in between are fine; the spacing applies to efforts, not to time on the bike.

Sleep does more for this than anything you can buy. Seven to eight hours consistently outweighs every recovery drink and supplement on the market, and it is the variable most riders in their forties and fifties are actually short of, usually for reasons that have nothing to do with cycling.

Prepare the body before the bike

Coming to mountain biking from a desk job means arriving with a weak lower back, short hip flexors and a thoracic spine that does not rotate. All three show up within the first month of regular riding, usually as lower back pain that gets blamed on the bike.

Four to six weeks of core work three times a week before you start riding regularly, planks, dead bugs and bird-dogs rather than sit-ups, meaningfully reduces the lumbar strain that hits desk workers who suddenly spend hours in a riding position. Ten minutes a day of hip flexor, hamstring and thoracic mobility work makes a difference you can feel within two or three weeks, mostly in how long you can stay comfortable in the position rather than in what you can reach.

Get the fit right, then consider shorter cranks

A bike fit session costs roughly 50 to 100 euros at a specialist shop and it is worth more to a rider over 40 than to anyone else, because the injuries a bad position causes are the slow kind. Wrist, lower back and knee problems from a wrong saddle height or reach build up over months and are much harder to resolve once they are established than to prevent.

If you already have knee pain when climbing, shorter cranks are worth trying before anything more drastic. Going from the common 175 mm to 165 mm reduces the peak flexion angle at the top of the pedal stroke, which is where the patellofemoral joint takes the most load during sustained climbing. It costs under 100 euros and it is reversible.

The risk that actually goes up

The honest tradeoff is this: mountain biking removes the overuse injury risk of running and replaces it with crash risk, and crash consequence gets worse with age. Bone heals more slowly, and the collarbone and wrist injuries that a 20-year-old rides through in six weeks take longer and sometimes do not fully resolve.

That risk is managed by skill and route choice, not by fitness. A fit rider descending something beyond their technical level is in more danger than an unfit one riding within it. Ride terrain you can see the whole of, learn to brake before corners rather than in them, and treat unfamiliar descents as reconnaissance the first time.

Protective equipment is worth the discomfort at this age in a way it may not have been at 25. A full-face helmet on descents and knee pads on anything technical cost nothing except looking cautious.

What it does give you

Everything the general benefits list claims about cardiovascular fitness, weight management and stress is real, and it applies here as it applies to any sustained aerobic activity. The general case for mountain biking covers that ground.

The part specific to middle age is that mountain biking is one of the few demanding sports you can start at 45 and still be improving at 60, because the skill component keeps developing long after the physiological ceiling stops moving. That is unusual, and it is the real reason people who take it up in their forties tend to still be riding twenty years later.

As with any new routine, talk to a doctor first if you have existing cardiovascular or joint issues, and stop when something hurts in a way that is sharp rather than tired.
